heads up — I think the mitochondria integration is going to need its own RFC. the import/export surface is not small. we are going to be moving most of the acquired genome into the host nucleus and then re-translocating the protein products back across two membranes. this is not a weekend.

I've been looking at some of these cortical configurations. the layered architecture is there — six laminae, already differentiating. it's very small. but the design space is interesting and I want to flag that this is going to generate follow-up work.
